Iraq, Syria Shut Airspace Amid Renewed Iran-Israel Tensions

(MENAFN) The regional fallout from renewed Iran-Israel hostilities widened Sunday evening as both Iraq and Syria announced emergency airspace restrictions, signaling growing alarm across the Middle East over rapidly escalating tensions.

An Iraqi news agency reported that Iraqi authorities moved to seal the country's airspace entirely for 72 hours in the immediate aftermath of Iran's missile assault on Israel.

Syria followed with its own restrictions, as the Syrian Civil Aviation Authority announced the temporary closure of the country's southern air corridors alongside a full suspension of operations at Damascus International Airport "in light of recent developments." The closure was set to run "for 12 hours, starting at 11:00 PM (local time) Sunday evening until 11:00 AM (local time) Monday morning," per an official statement citing "recent regional developments" and "ongoing technical assessments conducted by the Civil Aviation and Air Transport Authority through its Risk Management Committee." The decision "entails the suspension of operations at Damascus International Airport during the closure period," the statement added.

The cascade of airspace shutdowns followed Iran's late Sunday missile strikes on northern Israel — its first such bombardment since a fragile April ceasefire — launched in retaliation for Israeli strikes on Beirut's southern suburbs that killed at least two people and wounded 11 earlier in the day.

Iran's state broadcaster warned that attacks would continue "if Israel responds to Iranian attacks or does not stop its attacks on Lebanon."

Israeli media reported three waves of incoming missiles, including a salvo of four, with damage confirmed in Tiberias. The Israeli army stated the majority were successfully intercepted. Israeli authorities simultaneously suspended operations at Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv in response to the ongoing threat.
