Turkish FM states Russia-Ukraine discussions went well
Fidan stated that the discussions resulted in an agreement to broaden the scope of humanitarian exchanges. Both sides also exchanged written outlines of their positions regarding a ceasefire and broader conflict resolution. These documents will form the basis for technical discussions in the near future.
Additionally, the delegations made the decision to begin laying the groundwork for a potential summit involving the leaders of both countries.
"Guided by the collective will of our leaders, the result-oriented approach displayed by both sides to end the losses caused by the war is commendable," said Fidan. He further said, “in this historic process, I would like to once again thank both countries for their trust in Türkiye.”
The talks, which lasted a little over an hour, marked the second major attempt at negotiations hosted in Istanbul. Russia representative was a team led by a senior presidential aide, while Ukraine’s delegation was headed by the country’s defense minister.
One key outcome of the meeting was an agreement to exchange all critically ill or injured prisoners, along with prisoners of war who are younger than 25.
This latest round followed a previous session in mid-May, also held in Istanbul, which led to the most substantial prisoner exchange since the conflict began in early 2022.
